Beautifully detailed reproduction print from “Atlas Designed to Illustrate the Geography of the Heavens” by Elijah Burritt, originally published in New York in 1856.

Printed on heavyweight, museum-quality Hahnemühle Fine-Art paper.

Elijah Hinsdale Burritt (1794-1838) was a self-taught astronomer from Connecticut, USA. Despite growing up on a farm with limited formal education, Burritt’s passion for astronomy drove him to study the stars using a small telescope. He soon became recognized as an expert in the field and began writing books on the subject.

In 1835, Burritt published his most famous work, “Atlas Designed to Illustrate the Geography of the Heavens,” a collection of detailed star and constellation maps. This atlas was widely praised and became a bestseller, helping to popularize astronomy in America.

Though Burritt faced financial challenges and worked long hours in his family’s nail-making business, his contributions to astronomy were significant. He even invented a tool called the “celestial chartometer,” used to measure the altitude of stars.

Burritt’s work continues to inspire, and this reproduction print is a testament to his legacy—a beautiful piece of astronomical history, perfect for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
