Published in 1912, General Map of the Moon by Johann Krieger represents one of the finest achievements of pre-space-age lunar cartography.

Created from years of meticulous telescopic observation, it is less a picture of the Moon than a working document, where every line, label and annotation reflects humanity’s effort to understand another world.

Carefully restored from the original and reproduced as a museum-quality fine art print.

The Story

Johann Krieger (1865-1902) devoted much of his life to observing the Moon through a private observatory equipped with one of the finest telescopes of its time. Rather than relying on photography, which still struggled to capture fine lunar detail, he preferred direct visual observation, producing drawings of remarkable precision.

Although Krieger died before completing his great lunar atlas, it was published posthumously in 1912. His work soon became recognised as one of the masterpieces of lunar cartography, admired for both its scientific accuracy and extraordinary craftsmanship.

This general map brings together the countless craters, mountains and plains that had been identified by generations of astronomers. The coloured reference grid transformed the Moon into a landscape that could be systematically studied, discussed and explored decades before the first lunar missions.

Editor’s note

At first glance, it almost resembles an architect’s blueprint or an engineer’s notebook. The longer you look, the more you realise that every mark represents a real place on another world.

That’s the kind of scientific illustration I love most: practical in its purpose, beautiful almost by accident.

Restoration

This image has been carefully prepared for fine art printing.

Dust, stains, scanning artifacts, and tonal inconsistencies are corrected by hand where needed. The file is then checked for sharpness, tonal range, and print quality.

The goal is not to redesign the original, but to preserve its character while making it suitable for contemporary printing.
