In 1979, French astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet produced the first computer-generated visualization of a black hole surrounded by an accretion disk, a piece now widely known as the Jean-Pierre Luminet Black Hole print. Utilizing an IBM 7040 mainframe computer, he calculated the gravitational effects of a black hole on light from the accretion disk. Luminet then meticulously hand-drew the resulting image using India ink on negative paper, creating a detailed representation of the black hole’s appearance.
With its surreal, otherworldly glow, the Jean-Pierre Luminet Black Hole print reveals an intense accretion disk bending under extreme forces. A blend of scientific precision and aesthetic wonder, this piece brings viewers to the precipice of the unknown, inviting contemplation of space-time’s most enigmatic depths.
Available on heavyweight museum-quality Hahnemühle Fine Art paper or on premium 400 gsm canvas.
Canvas prints come ready to hang, mounted in a sustainably sourced wooden float frame that sits about 5 mm from the edge to create a subtle floating effect.
Luminet’s pioneering work provided a scientifically accurate black hole visualization that influenced research and popular culture. His depiction remarkably resembles the 2019 Event Horizon Telescope image, proving the accuracy of his early simulation. This Jean-Pierre Luminet Black Hole print continues to be celebrated for both its scientific and artistic significance.

I'd recommended that your new print be allowed to settle for a period of time prior to framing or hanging. Place your print under a few large books, sandwiching it between tissue paper on both sides, for a minimum of 24 hours.
