The original prints were often backed with tissue paper and featured holes, allowing users to hold them up to the light and see stars, planets, and phases of the Moon illuminated against a dark background.

The centerpiece of these prints highlights constellations and the Milky Way, surrounded by a calendar scale that allows viewers to identify the stars visible on any given night throughout the year.
