Originally part of a series of 12 beautifully hand-tinted astronomical prints introduced by James Reynolds in 1846, this reproduction brings to life the rich history of accessible scientific learning in the 19th century. Printed on heavyweight, museum-quality Hahnemühle Fine-Art paper, this print captures the charm and detail of the original.

These prints, created by John Emslie in collaboration with Reynolds, catered to a growing interest in astronomy among middle-class audiences. Priced at an affordable 1 shilling, they made scientific knowledge more accessible for home learning. The original prints were often backed with tissue paper and featured holes, allowing users to hold them up to the light and see stars, planets, and phases of the Moon illuminated against a dark background.

The centerpiece of these prints highlights constellations and the Milky Way, surrounded by a calendar scale that allows viewers to identify the stars visible on any given night throughout the year. The size of the holes and symbols indicate the magnitude of stars, offering both beauty and educational value.

James Reynolds’ educational diagrams gained widespread recognition, even winning a prize medal at the International Exhibition of 1862. This stunning reproduction is perfect for collectors and astronomy enthusiasts alike.

A black and white version of this print can be found here.
