Transparent Chart of Heavens was originally published in 1851 as part of James Reynolds’ celebrated educational astronomy series. Designed to help anyone learn the night sky, the chart combines a map of the constellations with a calendar showing which stars are visible at different times of the year.

The original edition featured tiny perforations and a translucent backing, allowing the stars to glow when held against the light. This museum-quality reproduction faithfully preserves the artwork and appearance of the original chart, but does not include the perforations of the nineteenth-century edition.

Carefully restored from the original and reproduced as a museum-quality fine art print.

The Story

Published in 1851, this chart formed part of a series of twelve astronomical diagrams created by John Emslie and published by James Reynolds, whose affordable educational prints helped bring scientific knowledge into Victorian homes.

Unlike conventional star charts, the original edition was backed with translucent tissue paper and carefully perforated. When held against a window or lamp, light passed through the tiny holes representing the stars, recreating the appearance of the night sky in a remarkably simple and elegant way.

At its centre, the chart depicts the constellations surrounding the north celestial pole and the Milky Way. Around the edge, a calendar scale allows the viewer to identify which stars are visible throughout the year, while the varying sizes of the perforations correspond to the brightness of individual stars.

Editor’s note

I chose this print because it reminds me that learning can be playful.

Someone realised that a sheet of paper could become a miniature planetarium simply by letting daylight pass through it. Even without its original interactive construction, the chart retains the quiet elegance of an object designed to spark curiosity.

Restoration

This image has been carefully prepared for fine art printing.

Dust, stains, scanning artifacts, and tonal inconsistencies are corrected by hand where needed. The file is then checked for sharpness, tonal range, and print quality.

The goal is not to redesign the original, but to preserve its character while making it suitable for contemporary printing.
